Nets Lose Running Game, Fall to Cavaliers in Final Seconds

The Brooklyn Nets had a chance to avenge their heartbreaking 108-104 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics last night, but suffered a similar fate against the NBA’s best team. They fought hard, but the Nets lost 105-100 on the road to former coach Kenny Atkinson and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The first quarter belonged to Cleveland and Donovan Mitchell. It didn’t seem to matter much, as the Cavaliers scored with ease from behind the arc, despite Brooklyn’s devastating defense. Four of Cleveland’s six 3-pointers came courtesy of Mitchell, but timely responses from the Nets kept the contest close.

Nearly every Cavaliers three-pointer was answered by a pass from Brooklyn, albeit to a lesser extent. Dennis Schröder and Dorian Finney-Smith added two points each, and Shake Milton added a point off the bench. Despite being unable to contain Cleveland’s offensive juggernaut, the Nets managed to escape the first half trailing 34-28.

Brooklyn’s performance in the second quarter meant two things. First, the Nets’ offense is exponentially better when Ben Simmons is on the floor. With the two-time All-Star sidelined in the second half of back-to-back games, Brooklyn sorely missed Simmons’ elite facilitation. Secondly, this team has a lot of courage.

The Nets did not give up despite being down 15 points in an 11-2 losing streak against the NBA’s best team. Once Cam Thomas finally got involved, they went right back to business and scored seven points in the quarter. Brooklyn held the Cavaliers scoreless for more than three minutes, going on a 12-0 run of its own and nearly tying the score. Once the Nets had drawn a horizontal line, they trailed by just two points at halftime.

To say Brooklyn built on a strong finish in the first half would be an understatement. On the first possession of the third quarter, Thomas tied the score inside. He was then fouled and gave the Nets a two-point lead on the charity stripe. This sequence set the stage for a terrifying 9-0 run in the opening two minutes, and after Schröder’s 3-pointer ended a 33-5 Brooklyn run that stretched five minutes into the second quarter.

From that point on, things got even uglier for Cleveland. The Nets forced the Cavaliers into another three-minute scoring drought, forcing the undefeated team to pull away. Unlike previous matches, Brooklyn fired on all cylinders in the third round and took an 82-70 advantage with 12 minutes left in the match.

Unfortunately, the Nets’ typical third-quarter collapse was postponed until the fourth quarter. Thanks to a masterful inside performance from Evan Mobley, Cleveland put together 6-0, 7-0 and 8-0 runs to get back to its first lead since the second quarter. Johnson, Schröder and Thomas did their best, but the Cavaliers, led by Kenny Atkinson, are just a machine. No matter what is thrown their way, they have prevailed in the first 11 games of the 2024-25 season.

When the final whistle blew, Brooklyn scored 56 points from home, 23 of which came thanks to Mobley, and became the latest victim of Cleveland’s early-season tear.

Currently at 4-6, the Nets look to end their two-game losing streak against the New Orleans Pelicans in their road finale in Brooklyn on Monday night.
