FRSC condemns careless driving that killed 11 people in crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) warned vehicle owners against reckless driving and urged vehicle owners to take safety precautions while driving to reduce preventable accidents.

The Corps was responding to the fatal accident at Mairuwa village on the Funtua-Sokoto road, which claimed the lives of at least eleven people.

FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed said the incident could have been prevented.

In a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, in Abuja, Mohammed attributed the accident to poor vehicle maintenance, excessive speed and non-compliance with traffic rules.

The fatal accident occurred in Mairuwa village of Katsina state when the tire of Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number MRR 83 XA, loaded with passengers coming from Kano, burst.

The driver crashed head-on into a Sino Truck belonging to the Dangote Group.

“The accident could have been prevented if the driver had complied with the legal speed limits, provided adequate vehicle maintenance and obeyed traffic rules,” he said.

The FRSC boss cited recent examples of how poor driving behavior has led to preventable road accidents, emphasizing that if drivers do the right thing, problems with accidents and fatalities will be a thing of the past in Nigeria.

He added that the huge responsibility of keeping the roads safe lies on everyone’s shoulders.

He said that in order to prevent such accidents, drivers should comply with the set speed limits, perform vehicle maintenance regularly and obey traffic rules.
