Two laboratory assistants and security guards arrested with human organs

Masaka City police are detaining two laboratory assistants and a private security guard for allegedly possessing human organs.
It was stated that the suspects were affiliated with the Lancet laboratories branch in Masaka City.

The private security guard reportedly offered a courier service to laboratory assistants to take the organs to an unknown location.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the trio transported human body parts from Kampala to the Lancet laboratory.

“Last night around 8.30pm, a security guard and another person who was still at large were riding a motorbike carrying a small bucket and human organs wrapped in a box, but they had a minor accident after hitting the bumps at Kijjabwemi commercial centre. Greater Masaka district police spokesman Twaha Kasirye “Fresh human organs fell from the carrier of the motorcycle with registration number UEK-422U along Masaka-Kyabakuza Road,” he told this correspondent on Saturday.

Mr. Kasirye said that after a bucket in a box fell on the asphalt, a vehicle coming from behind hit the box and the organs exploded.

“Some residents who came to the trio’s rescue were shocked to see the human parts, prompting them to call our detectives who quickly intervened to assist with investigations and arrested the trio,” he added.
Police said the organs came from both Villa-Maria Hospital and Kitovu hospital, but said the aim of the investigation was to establish exactly whose organs were removed and whether the victims were still alive.

“We are still meeting with the management of both hospitals to know exactly what these organs are,” Mr. Kasirye added.
A senior staff member at Lancet laboratories’ Masaka office, who preferred to remain anonymous as he was not authorized to speak to the media, said he regretted the incident, saying the organs were transferred to their laboratory in Kampala for further examination.
However, he refused to reveal details.
