Traffic on I-40 and I-25 impacted due to severe winter conditions

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Heavy truck congestion on I-40 is creating traffic at a stop near Moriarty and Santa Rosa on Friday.

Trucks parked on roadsides and at truck stops overnight began moving on Friday, a New Mexico Department of Transportation spokesman said. Some drivers say they waited more than two hours from Santa Rosa to Moriarty.

Officials say icy roads also contribute to traffic slowdowns.

Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 were closed Thursday due to the winter storm.

I-40 was closed in Clines Corners and westbound lanes were closed in Tucumcari due to severe winter weather. As a result of the closure, southbound U.S. Highway 285 was also closed at mile marker 290, one mile south of I-25, near Santa Fe. Northbound US 285 traffic was diverted to southbound I-25 due to the closure of that route.

Northbound I-25 was closed from mile marker 339, just north of Las Vegas, to mile marker 460 through Raton Pass. Southbound I-25 was also closed at mile marker 460.

Law enforcement closed the road due to weather conditions causing unsafe travel conditions, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

“As I said, we borrowed equipment from other districts to help. Mainly Zone 3 in Albuquerque, but they will be there and all zones will have 12-hour shifts,” said NMDOT Public Information Officer James Murray.

NMDOT advises other roads may be snow-covered and icy and crews may salt and sand. They also recommend driving carefully and staying at least 15 feet behind snow plows.

In northeastern New Mexico, 94 miles of U.S. Highway 56 from Springer to the Texas state line are closed. US 64 was also closed from mile marker 350, one mile east of Raton, to mile marker 430 in Clayton.

The problems in these areas are snow-covered and icy roads and zero visibility due to blizzard conditions. Travel is not recommended.
