Grief counselor offers tips for post-election sadness

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -The 2024 election is over and some are facing mixed emotions. While one side of the country celebrates victory, the other side suffers from what could have happened.

“People feel like they are being personally attacked. And when you feel personally attacked or undervalued as an individual, you are walking in shoes of tremendous pain and hurt,” said grief counselor Phelica Glass.

Recovering from the election begins with feeling the emotions that come with pain: sadness, fear, and anger.

“So the healing process, to me, is about standing in front of the mirror, taking control of our own values, our own morals, and being able to display those in a loving and kind way to others.”

It’s important to make decisions that are in your best interest when it comes to your relationships.

“Whether it’s someone posting, unfriending or unfollowing someone for thirty days, or making some tough relationship decisions about what kind of boundaries we want to set in our personal lives, people are going to have to make that decision individually.”

When making these decisions, it is necessary to be informed by important people and places.

“I encourage you to surround yourself individually with people who love you, whose actions are aligned with love. Take shelter in places that hear you, see you and value you.”

Once you process your own emotions, you can look at how you put your emotions into action.

“Find a way to connect. Participate in your local legislation. Get involved in your local government organizations. Join social action groups. Find ways to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

Phelica also shared that if you feel like you’re in crisis, you should reach out to organizations like Stormont Vail. You can find a list of resources Here.
