A fake gun was found in the house of a 13-year-old boy who allegedly planned to scare primary school students: Police

Several replica guns were seized from the home of a 13-year-old boy who allegedly planned to scare students at a Wisconsin elementary school but was prevented from entering the building, according to police.

Kenosha police said the 13-year-old boy tried to enter his old school, Roosevelt Elementary, around 9 a.m. Thursday morning with a backpack and duffel bag.

Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Jeffrey Weiss told reporters that the teen tried to enter through other doors but was unable to get in. He then approached the front entrance and entered a vestibule area. Weiss said two school employees confronted the student, who became angry and ran away.

Police said no real weapons were found, and the suspect’s mother told authorities the teen did not have access to weapons.

Police said the suspect told police he went to the school that day to sell candy. Police said in a statement that the teenager “later told a social worker that he went to the school to scare students.”

The teen is expected to make his first court appearance Friday, police said.

Police said the suspect researched school shootings online and made comments to other students for weeks before the incident.

“We narrowly missed a tragedy,” Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton told reporters at a news conference Thursday, before police determined the shots were not real.

“I can’t tell you how heroic our office staff were,” Weiss said. “They helped prevent a disaster.”

Kenosha is located approximately 40 miles south of Milwaukee.
