BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – East Birmingham neighbors are excited about new development coming to their area in 2025.

The City of Birmingham approved $1 million to redesign the Northeast YMCA and add more than 20 homes to the Roebuck community.

People are especially excited in the Roebuck district. Neighborhood President Becky Wallace said this was a big deal for her community and the redevelopment would be a great addition to the neighbourhood.

“This property will be put to great use because it will have housing on it, there will be a small park, the YMCA will be rejuvenated, and I think it will be great,” Wallace said. .

The city is actually partnering with several others in the area to form the Roebuck Collaborative. The list of partners includes Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham, Christ Health Center, Impact Family Counseling, Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, United Way of Central Alabama/Meals on Wheels and Alabama First Class Pre-K.

It will cost the city a million dollars, but the total project cost is expected to be just over $15 million.

“The mayor’s community development team has been really involved in bringing these funds together to help them with these projects. Basically the project started and included some single family housing, a community center, some basic healthcare and general services on site. So there is an incredible revival,” said Councilman Clinton Woods.

Part of the project will focus on the Northeast YMCA. Crews are undertaking major renovations to their existing 18,000-square-foot facility and added a new 8,000-square-foot facility that will make room for a world-class wellness center, mental health and nutrition counseling, and a family and community resource center. The Habitat Village, or residential component of the project, will be completed in phases of five to six homes at a time and will include a community garden, multi-purpose facility and play units when completed.

“We’re excited about the growth and the trend, and if we can continue to pile on these positive projects, I think we’ll look up and really like where we’re going and where we are,” Woods said.

The entire project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
