‘Skating rink-style roads’ blamed for multi-vehicle crash on Winnipeg’s southern border

Winnipeg’s southern Ring Highway was closed for approximately two hours in both directions Tuesday morning due to a multiple vehicle collision caused by icy conditions.

The first crash was reported just after 7 a.m. and several more vehicles followed, involving about six vehicles in total, police said.

Police said one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Roads reopened shortly after 09:00

A police spokesman said the impacts were mostly minor as oncoming vehicles slowed down, but drivers noticed they were unable to stop in time due to “skating rink type roads” causing them to slide.

A wet Monday and below-freezing temperatures overnight left much of the city covered in a slippery layer of frost Tuesday morning.

The crash was mostly between Pembina Highway and St. It affected the westbound lanes between St. Mary’s Road, but eastbound lanes were also closed for emergency vehicle access and to allow city crews to sand slippery sections.

“It’s a good time to remind drivers that when you’re crossing a bridge in these temperatures, near zero temperatures, the air moving under the bridge is going to create some really bad icing,” said Const. Steve Spencer.
