Churches opened in metro Detroit for those experiencing post-election stress

Now that the election is behind us, the emotions and stress that led to it may still be lingering, which is why several churches in metro Detroit are opening their doors for the community to find solitude.

Social Worker Charmain Allen lets those who are feeling down or exhausted have a place to recharge.

“After the election, we saw that many people received this news. In the meantime, our energy dropped a little, but we are implementing our faith,” he said. “We keep the faith.”

That’s the message from the historic King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit to anyone who feels defeated or demoralized by the election.

“The church will be open for worship,” he said. “Counseling is open. So if someone needs someone to talk to, if you’re losing hope, we have therapists. There’s a minister to help you.”

Allen, a churchgoer and clinical therapist social worker, said it’s best to come Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will even arrange an appointment for those who cannot come at these hours.

“You know, in our previous elections in the last 10 years, we realize that sometimes the elections did not turn out in our favor,” he said. “So leaning on each other is really the best way to move forward and move forward.”

They are not the only church doing this. There are a few in the Detroit metro area that open their doors, allowing people to come in and pray or just be alone. Allen says it’s important to pay attention to your mental health if you’re feeling stressed.

So inhale, then exhale. Do this as often as necessary.

Second, find a community. People who share your belief system. When you’re hurting, it’s not the time to be alone.

“Lean on your faith right now. Find a church you can go to that shares the same political beliefs and values as you,” he said. “The abs, like I said, come together at that moment.”
