Have an unwanted shotgun lying around the house? How about a pair of antlers or some old fishing gear?

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will be happy to take them off your hands as part of its Guns for Habitat and Antlers for Habitat programs.

The program allows people to donate unwanted firearms, horns and outdoor equipment. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will then auction the items and the proceeds will purchase important wildlife habitat in Saskatchewan.

Over the past 20 years, the program has raised over $300,000 to protect wildlife habitat.

“We own approximately 80,000 acres in the state of Saskatchewan. This money is used for us to go back and continue purchasing land. We are shooting to purchase more wildlife habitat every year,” said Darren Newberry, Habitat Lands Director for the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation.

Donors will receive a tax-deductible receipt for the amount for which the donation was sold.

For those concerned about the transfer of firearms, Newberry said the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation would be happy to help.

“If they have firearms they want to donate, just give us a call and then we can have someone come directly to their home to pick them up and we can take care of them from there,” he explained.

Those wishing to donate in person can do so at the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation office at 9 Lancaster Road in Moose Jaw.
