Olympic competition will be revived on the SVNS Series stage as the world’s best teams chase a dream start to the 2024/25 season. The top two teams in each pool and the two best third-place teams will advance to the quarter-finals.

Australia will look to defend their crown at the Dubai Sevens after New Zealand ended their long-running winning streak in last year’s Women’s Cup Final. South Africa have traditionally been the team defeated in the men’s draw, having won seven of the last eight championships played in Dubai.

“The draw of our fixtures for the first round of HSBC SVNS 2025 will undoubtedly create great excitement for sports fans around the world.” Mathew TaitDubai 7s Festival Director said the following in his statement.

“It will be the first time the teams have played at this level since the Paris Olympics in the summer and it will be another action-packed weekend with so many sevens stars to watch!”

The opening day of the new season starts at 9am local time with Olympic champions New Zealand taking on Brazil. New Zealand almost fell to newly promoted South Africa in their opening match last season, showing the unpredictable nature of the sevens in such matches.

The Black Ferns Sevens will face Thalia Costa’s Yaras on the second field, while Olympic silver medalist Canada will open the account against Japan on the main field. New Zealand will face Canada in the rematch of the Olympic final at 16:07.

The morning session features a mouth-watering encounter between the USA and Great Britain at 09:22, with Ireland taking on Fiji around 22 minutes later. Australia, the defending champion of the SVNS Series, will start their season against China.

China is not a team to be taken lightly either. They may have fallen to New Zealand and Canada in the Olympic pool stage, but they beat Fiji 40-12 to reach the quarter-finals, losing to Team NZ for the second time.

Towards the end of the day, France will face Olympic bronze medalists (16:51) and Australia will face Ireland. The Irish defeated Australia in the SVNS Perth Cup Final in January, but the women’s gold medalists have dominated that competition since then.

The men’s draw will be played between New Zealand and the USA at 10.06. This will be the Eagles Sevens’ first match under new coach Simon Amor, who has previously worked with both Japan and England.

Fiji will face Spain at the same time in the second home game. Although Fiji will enter this match as strong favourites, don’t rule out the Spaniards just yet; They posted a stunning 21-19 victory over the traditional sevens heavyweights in the Los Angeles quarters last season.

In Group B, 2024 SVNS Series League Winners Argentina will open their season against South American rivals Uruguay at 10:28 am, while Ireland will face familiar foe Great Britain in another highly anticipated clash that practically previews itself.

Reigning champions South Africa will begin their title defense against Australia in the late morning. Then at 14:58, fan favorites Kenya will return to the top flight when they take on the Blitzboks in a highly intriguing encounter.

Day one concludes with New Zealand beating Fiji, Argentina taking on Ireland and Olympic champions France raining down on South Africa’s Dubai Sevens parade at 8.44pm. These could all be important fixtures in the race to top the pool or potentially get into the quarters.

Following the opening day of play, fans can head to the ‘Rugby Rocks’ stage, where Saturday’s headline act is British pop band Sugababes. Award-winning artist Stormzy will perform on the ‘Frequency on 8’ stage on Sunday at 21.30.

The entire program can be viewed or downloaded via emiratesdubai7’s website and/or app; here fans can find a breakdown and timeline of all three pools. It is a festival experience that blends sports, entertainment and family activities in a three-day event.

Tickets start from AED 435 for a day pass or AED 550 for a weekend pass. Admission is free for everyone on Friday, and children under four can go for free all weekend. Tickets are AED 325 for Persons of Determination, including carer.

As this is the largest sports and entertainment event in the Middle East, it is an event not to be missed. The event attracts more than 80,000 participants from 128 districts and is also the longest-running sporting event in the region.

It will be held over the UAE National Day weekend.
