An election official in Virginia has been fired after 11 voters undervoted, according to multiple local news outlets.

The Richmond Board of Elections fired County Supervisor Barbara Burgo in an emergency meeting Tuesday. According to WRIC-TV.

Voters were given ballots that listed federal elections but not mayor, city council or school board. According to VPM News, an NPR station.

“I have a new clerk who voted incorrectly for 11 people,” Burgo told VPM Tuesday morning. “He’s new. He made a mistake. He’s human.”

Keith Balmer, Richmond’s general registrar, told VPM that the problem stemmed from voters being given ballots that were intended to be given to military or overseas voters.

Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Susan Beals said at a 10 a.m. briefing on the issue that the problem had been resolved and voters who cast the wrong ballot would not be allowed to cast another ballot, VPM reported.

USA TODAY contacted the Board of Elections to confirm Burgo’s removal but did not immediately receive a response late Tuesday.
