EMINENCE, Mo. (KY3) – Students in the Eminence School District encountered unexpected help on their way home from school Tuesday afternoon.

According to Timber Community Fire Protection District Chief Todd Hamilton, crews from his department and the National Park Service went to the Sinking Creek Bridge because the road was flooded and impassable for buses.

Chief Hamilton said there were approximately 22 children on the bus and the bus’ route was 20 miles one way.

“There were two large pickups on each side and a cable was pulled between them and the NPS was transporting the kids to the other side. Life jackets were collected for children to wear while these events were ongoing,” said Chief Hamilton.

Chief Hamilton told KY3 he spoke with the superintendent and the superintendent followed school protocols in releasing the children. Chief Hamilton is also the father of the two children on the bus.

“If parents had to go to school to pick up their children, it would have been a two-hour drive to get around the flood,” Chief Hamilton said.
