KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man injured in a shooting at a recording studio in Westport on Oct. 9 has been charged with attempted robbery and two other felonies.

Jackson County prosecutors charged Jerome Washington, age unspecified, with attempted first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm; dangerous offender/prior conviction.

The shooting, which injured five people, occurred around 8 p.m. at a recording studio at 315 Westport Road.

One of the shooting victims told police he and two other men had gone to the studio to make music, the court document states.

The victim told police he normally called the recording studio’s producer to ask to be allowed into the building.

The men found the entrance door open and decided to enter.

When they went upstairs, they found five men carrying AR-style rifles and pistols with high-capacity drum magazines, according to the court document.

The producer told the three men to leave, and the two went to the break room on the other side of the studio.

A man remained in the studio and Washington walked up to the man and refused to let him go.

Washington hit the victim in the head with the gun, went through his pockets, and tried to steal the victim’s backpack.

The men in the recording studio exchanged gunfire with at least one of the victims.

Police found three people with serious gunshot wounds. The other two victims went to the hospital on their own.

The city shut down the business, Westport Media Collective, after the shootings for operating without a proper license.
