North Korea’s latest tests have political significance for what they say about the Kim regime’s lack of restraint, said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. “Pyongyang shows that its contribution of weapons and troops to Russia’s war in Ukraine does not restrict its military activities near the country.”

He added: “On the contrary, cooperation with Moscow appears to enable blatant violations of UN Security Council resolutions.”

It seems largely that way. North Korea hopes to eventually use expanded nuclear arsenal As leverage to win concessions such as sanctions relief after a new US president is elected.

There are widespread views that Mr Kim would prefer the Republican candidate to win Donald TrumpWith whom he engaged in high-stakes nuclear diplomacy in 2018–19, he viewed her as a counterpart more likely to give him what he wanted than the Democratic candidate. Kamala Harris.

During the campaign, Ms. Harris said she would “not welcome tyrants and dictators like Kim Jong Un who support Trump.”

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters: There were 10 thousand North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region of Russia They were near the Ukrainian border and were preparing to join Moscow’s fight against Ukraine in the coming days.
