Holden’s story – Hockey Fights Cancer

Holden is an eight-year-old boy who loves being outside. Before his diagnosis, he was most likely seen riding his bike, playing in the sandbox, or exploring nature. Life is very different today. About a year ago, Holden started feeling unwell. Over the next few months, she went back and forth to the doctor and had numerous tests. His family knew something wasn’t right. After being hospitalized, a series of blood tests led to an ultrasound and CT scan that would eventually provide some answers.

Holden and his family received the shocking news that a large mass had grown in one of his kidneys. It would later be diagnosed as Wilms tumor, a rare form of kidney cancer that mainly affects children. He was hospitalized and immediately started chemotherapy to shrink the tumor. Weeks later, Holden would undergo major surgery to remove one of his kidneys.

Luckily, the surgery was successful. Holden then completed 11 rounds of radiation therapy and then began chemotherapy once again. Life is pretty unpredictable right now for Holden and his family. Chemotherapy treatments are tough and the side effects are terrible, and as a result Holden often spends time in the hospital.
