Grand Forks man pleads not guilty in July 4th murder – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks man

He was accused of fatally shooting another man on July 4

He waived a preliminary hearing at a downtown bar on Monday, Nov. 4, and pleaded not guilty to four felony charges after the hearing.

Nicholas Jon Narveson, 27, is charged with class AA felony murder, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole. There is a mandatory minimum sentence of four years in prison.

Narveson is also charged with three Class C felonies: terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, reckless endangerment with extreme recklessness, and criminal mischief causing $2,000 to $10,000 in damage.

The terrorism and endangerment charges each carry a mandatory minimum term of two years.

Law enforcement officers were dispatched to Sledsters Food & Brew shortly after 7 p.m. July 4 for a reported shooting, according to an affidavit filed in the case. Witnesses reported seeing Narveson pull out his handgun, fire multiple shots at James Erwin Jorgenson, and flee the bar.

53-year-old Jorgenson was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were a number of other customers in the bar at the time, which the affidavit said posed a serious risk of additional injuries and caused people to fear for their safety. The bullets fired also damaged the business.

Narveson was located at a nearby business and taken into custody without incident, the affidavit said.
