Banana Leaf Apolo was suspended for selling contaminated food, among other hygiene violations; Singapore News, another Little India restaurant fined

Operations of two restaurants in Little India were suspended for two weeks from November 8 to 21.

According to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), on Friday (November 8) both Banana Leaf Apolo and Shahi Briyani House had their licenses suspended for failing to meet hygiene requirements.

Banana Leaf Apolo, located at 56 Raceway Road, received 14 demerit points over a 12-month period and was fined a total of $1,000 for failing to keep its premises clean, failing to ensure equipment was kept clean and failing to sell contaminated food.

The famous restaurant, whose special dish is curried fish head, has two other restaurants in Serangoon and Sixth Avenue.

Another restaurant, Shahi Briyani House at 10 Rowell Road, received 16 demerit points over a 12-month period and was fined a total of $1,100 for failing to keep its premises clean and free of infestation and failing to register an assistant.

According to the SFA, a license holder who accumulates 12 or more penalty points within a 12-month period may have their license suspended for two to four weeks or canceled altogether.

Additionally, all food handlers working at the suspended facility are required to complete and pass the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 before they can return to their duties.

All food handlers at the suspended facility are also required to re-attend and pass the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 to resume their duties.

SFA stated that it takes these crimes seriously and reminded food operators that they must maintain high food and personal hygiene standards at all times. This includes employing only registered food handlers and ensuring appropriate care and maintenance of licensed facilities, including toilets.
