(FOX2) – a site huge deadly wreck The hospital in mid-Michigan that killed four people over the weekend has reopened after more than a day of cleaning.

Access to the westbound I-96 overpass near Webberville in Ingham County was restored Monday morning, state police said in a statement on social media. It took more than 24 hours for the highway on M-52 to reopen after a truck crashed into stopped traffic late Saturday night.

While three of the dead were in the same vehicle, the driver of the pickup truck was thrown from the vehicle and died.

The driver of the semi-truck also suffered serious burn injuries, Michigan State Police told FOX 2 on Sunday.

“I ended up having to dive into a group of vehicles. This caused an explosion and the vehicles caught fire,” said Lt. Rene Gonzalez.

Video of the crash also included security footage from a nearby gas station that showed a fireball erupting from the highway after the crash. More video from drivers showed the semi-truck on fire as debris fell onto the highway below.

17 more people were hospitalized after the accident that occurred at around 23.48 on Saturday night.

Just before that, state troopers had closed I-96 to put up lampposts over the highway for DTE. While roadworks were ongoing, roadworks required traffic to be closed.

According to Gonzalez, road work had been done and they were in the process of allowing traffic to continue when the accident occurred.
