Latest US elections: Snipers stand guard as thousands line up for Trump rally; shock poll puts Harris ahead in Iowa | US News

The former US ambassador to the UK has told Sky News it is unlikely we will see a certified result from Tuesday’s US election.

Speaking to Trevor Phillips on Sunday Morning, Philip Reeker said it was an “incredibly tight race” and “no one can predict it for sure”.

“I don’t expect to see a confirmed result on Tuesday night,” he said.

“You may remember in the 2020 election, it took several days for some states to come and call. We also ran into a lot of legal challenges.”

“It could take a few days or a week” to get results, he said.

“And then the legal challenges start, both sides are practicing law. They’ll be ready for that.”

“Someone said, who won this election? Lawyers!”

When asked how Trump’s second term would differ from his first, Trump said he would bring “his four years of experience in the White House” with “lessons perhaps learned, perhaps not learned.”

“I think institutions in America will resist. They will probably get us through a turbulent period of reflection,” he added.

“If you look at history, we’ve been through this before. But this will be a particularly worrying time.”

Asked if Donald Trump was serious about imposing a 20% tariff on all imports, he said: “I think that’s something people should expect. Economists have expressed great concern about this.”
