US-Egypt archaeological team unearths 4,000-year-old tomb filled with jewels near Luxor

The group also described the green-blue glazed faience fertility figurine as a “significant find.”

“It is well modeled and decorated with various jewels and diamond markings on the legs and torso,” Pischikova said. he said. “Her cropped hair is dyed black. Her head has holes arranged in three sections. These holes were designed for the addition of ‘hair’. Approximately 4,000 mud beads found next to the figurine constituted her original hair.”

The tomb’s wooden coffins and the thin sheets they contained were mostly destroyed by what researchers believe were ancient floods.

The coffins contained the skeletons of five women, two men and three children.

The tomb, located in the South Asasif necropolis next to the Hatshepsut Temple on the West Bank of the Nile River in Luxor, probably belonged to a family, researchers said.

According to the South Asian Conservation Project, the tomb is the first Middle Kingdom tomb discovered in the region.

“The discovery of the first Middle Kingdom tomb in the South Asasif necropolis changes its history and places South Asasif within the expanding Theban Middle Kingdom necropolis,” Pischikova said. he said.

He added: “This important discovery contributes to our understanding of the burial practices and rituals of the Theban necropolis in the Middle Kingdom, as well as providing a fine collection of well-preserved, exquisitely crafted jewelery from the site.”
