The state’s top cross country talent enjoyed a day at the park at the MSTCA Frank Mooney Invitational

In final tweaks ahead of next weekend’s MIAA divisional round, some of the Bay State’s top cross country talent cruised to dominant victories Saturday at the MSTCA Frank Mooney Invitational in Wrentham.

Personal records were shattered throughout the day due to temperatures in the mid-50s and a flat trend at the Wrentham Development Center.

The highlight of the afternoon was the girls’ Junior/Senior race, where Whitinsville Christian star Emily Flagg ran the fastest 5k this season in Massachusetts in a remarkable time of 17 minutes, 21.92 seconds.

That time set a personal best of 25 seconds for Flagg, who is unbeaten in seven invitational races this season and will be the favorite for the Division 2 state championship race in two weeks.

Behind Flagg in the loaded field were Oxford’s Cameron Davis (17:43.82), who broke a 10-second personal best in the battle for second, and Holliston’s reigning Division 2 champion Maggie Kuchman (17:49.17) in third.

The girls’ Big School Junior and Senior races resulted in dominant individual victories; Central Catholic’s Madeline Courtemanche cruised to a 68-second win (18:15.74) in the senior competition, and Westford’s Emily Wedlake (18:31.24) won by 50. Seconds in the junior race.

Newton South was the only Division 1 boys competitor to show its full starting lineup on Saturday, with the top five runners each finishing in the top seven of the boys’ Varsity Senior race.

The Lions improved to both a personal best and the top 20 in Massachusetts this season, with Thomas Flaig placing first (15:27.20) and Alex Freidman placing second (15:29.74).

In the Large School Junior boys race, there was a quality duel between winner Michael Upton of Catholic Memorial (15:45.05) and runner-up Jason Provost of Beverly (15:49.91); both broke personal bests and were 30 seconds ahead. Bridgewater-Raynham’s Brian Peters finished the race in third place (16:21.66).

Although the varsity race was only a 3-kilometer distance, Central Catholic standout Kyla Breslin still made her mark with a 27-second victory in the Big School girls race (10:43.70) — the girls’ third-fastest 3-kilometer race in the state this season .
