COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The jury trial in the murder trial of former Columbus police officer Adam Coy will last a week.

The 15-person delegation spent Thursday and Friday deliberating but has not yet reached a decision. Jurors wrapped up around 3:30pm on Thursday and just after 4pm on Friday.

Coy faces murder, reckless homicide and aggravated assault charges in the December 2020 shooting of Andre Hill.

provided to jury members all the evidenceDuring a hearing to determine Coy’s guilt or innocence. They came into the courtroom several times on Thursday and Friday to ask the judge questions, but it is not known what those questions were.

On December 22, 2020, Coy shot and killed 47-year-old Andre Hill, who was unarmed at the time. Shy Statement was given on MondayHe stated that he believed Hill was holding a silver handgun when he fired, but later noticed that Hill was holding a set of keys in his hand.

Prosecutors argued Coy was reckless in his actions the night he shot Hill. Coy’s lawyers argued that he acted in accordance with his training.

Legal experts say this case is complex.

“I would be surprised if they could reach a unanimous decision here,” said Mark Weaver, who served as special prosecutor.

“The jury is probably going to be hung because this case is hard to prove and every single juror would agree that Officer Coy should not have fired that shot,” he said.

“It’s hard to find police-involved shootings where the jury unanimously says yes. We’ll second-guess the officer and say he intended to kill that person. It’s very hard to find juries that will do that.”
