1. Focus on the club face

Most golfers who cut the ball have an open club face throughout the shot, not just during the swing.

2. Grip

Your grip must be precise to avoid cutting the golf ball. This means that the club in your front hand is held properly in the fingers and not in the palm. For golfers with holes in their gloves, this means you are gripping the club incorrectly.

Many golfers who slice tend to place their thumb directly in the middle of the grip. Instead, place your thumb slightly off-center, to the right, if you are a right-handed golfer, or just to the left, if you are a left-handed golfer.

3. Posture

Posture has a lot to do with making good contact. This means having your arms hang down with your hands under your shoulders, which will help steady your downward club path.

Naturally, your arms will swing where they hang, so having good posture will help you stay more straight.

4. Depth in flashback

You should definitely allow the club to move behind you on your turn. Depth is directly related to the rotation of your body through your back and hips rather than using only your arms.

As you twist and turn your body, you can let your arms swing down from your shoulder height. This correct path will help you achieve a straight shot or draw, assuming your grip and club face are correct.

5. Release

To help combat this problem, I recommend using one of my favorite drills.

When gripping the club, place your hands 4 to 6 inches apart and perform your normal golf swing. The club head doesn’t need to hit the ground when you do this, and you don’t even need to use a ball in the first place.

Try to hear some ‘buzz’ as you swing forward; This will affect whether the club face stays square or closed as your hands are spread apart.

If you are too tight or delay this release you will not be able to hear the ‘buzz’ sound.

After adding a ball, bring your hands together again and try to release the club face.

6. Exaggerated coverage

I think drills are a great way to prevent you from cutting the golf ball; Here’s another method worth trying.

Place your ball on a low tee.

Now, half-putt with a short to medium-length iron and on your forward swing, try to exaggerate the swing of the club face by keeping the face facing the ground. It should be at hip height at the front of your swing.

7. Be willing to hit the hooks

8. The way down

Beyond the club face at impact, the second largest impact on ball flight is the downward trajectory. This is where you want your arms to swing down over your turned shoulder line.

To get a feel for this, I recommend using alignment sticks, which can help your swing path go out and over the ball.

Getting things in order to avoid this over-the-top path will help provide feedback and improvement.

9. Eliminate tension

As mentioned before, tension can greatly affect your slice. So you’ll want to try to minimize this to have a natural swing and speed.

Most club grips are tapered, meaning they are larger at the top and smaller at the bottom. However, too many amateurs grip the club too tightly and wrongly think that if they loosen their grip the club will move towards them.

Instead of using a death grip, hold the club lightly. This will ensure that you feel the weight of the club head throughout your entire golf swing.

10. Close your posture

Try closing your stance to help improve your spin ability and have depth in your backswing.

Do your normal setup and point your club face towards your target. Then, drop your trail foot back about 2 to 6 inches, allowing your shoulders and forearms to respond as well.

This subtle movement will give you an advantage on your turn and help the club take a more accurate path from the inside, which will help eliminate slices.
