Police investigating fatal stabbing of 12-year-old boy in Sofia

Police are investigating the tragic death of 12-year-old Carmel Middle School student Kareem Durant, who was fatally stabbed Tuesday in Cummings Park at E Field Sophia. It is alleged that an 11-year-old boy from the same neighborhood, who is reportedly a friend of Durant, was involved in the incident.

According to the initial police investigation, the two children were playing together at around 19.10 on the evening of the incident. The suspect was sitting on a pile of PVC pipes near his home when Durant reportedly approached and pushed him, causing the suspect to fall. The younger boy then went inside to report the fight to his older brother, who then confronted Durant.
After the argument, Durant left but returned a short time later with another person with scissors in his hand. Durant then allegedly attacked the suspect’s older brother and stabbed him in the lower left side. In response, the 11-year-old suspect is said to have pulled a knife from his waistband and stabbed Durant in the chest.

Durant tried to run home but collapsed on the sidewalk in front of his house. His older brother, Shawn Fletchman, rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
CIDHQ Crime Laboratory examined the scene and recovered a brown-handled knife from a nearby trench, believed to be the weapon used. The scissors left where Durant collapsed were also retrieved. Both items were collected as evidence.

The young suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to the Turkish Police Station with his father. Durant’s body is currently in GPHC’s morgue, pending an autopsy.
Police are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident.
