Son killed his mother, reported fake kidnapping to 911 in San Tan Valley

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office says a woman was killed by her son, left his body on a farm field in the San Tan Valley, and then called police claiming he had been kidnapped.

Pinal County Lt. Ross Teeple identified the woman Wednesday morning as 38-year-old Mary Collier.

Deputies said the jogger called 911 after spotting the body west of Gantzel Road and south of Skyline Drive around 9 a.m. Vineyard Plains Drive.

Investigators later determined that the son called 911, saying his mother had been kidnapped. But authorities say they believe Collier and his son willingly left the house and walked toward the farm field before killing him.

Detectives noted that a fight was reported the night before the murder, but there were no details regarding a possible motive. Authorities described the incident as a mere case of domestic violence.

Collier had injuries consistent with being cut or stabbed, and Lt. Teeple said there was no evidence that Collier was shot or that any firearm was used in the crime.

Deputies said her son was found with self-inflicted injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Once his injuries are treated, he will be transferred to the Pinal County jail on a charge of first-degree murder.

No other information has been released. Authorities say investigators are still trying to piece together what led to Collier’s death and determine a possible cause.
