On election night, the Electoral College will release unofficial results for the races.

Max Bever of the Chicago Board of Elections joins ABC7 to talk about how the process works.

Bever said mail-in ballots will be processed the weekend before election night and the results will be counted on election night.

“The results that we’re getting, people’s votes, their election for president, their election for state attorney, those are collected but not made public. Even the board doesn’t have access to those secret ballots. So at this hour, at 7 p.m., when all the polls are closed and on Election Day, all across the district.” “When polling places are closed, it’s like a switch is flipped and all previously cast ballots are tabulated and added to your precinct results.”

Bever said these votes will be the earliest votes reported on election night.

Ballots mailed in on Monday and after Election Day will be processed in the days following Election Day, Bever said. Bever said there is a two-week counting period during which all properly marked ballots will be counted.
