The once luxurious palace of Bangladesh’s autocratic former leader Sheikh Hasina will become a museum to honor the revolution that toppled her, the leader of the caretaker government said on Monday.

“The museum must preserve the memories of his misrule and the anger of the people that removed him from power,” Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammed Younis said while touring the decrepit Ganabhaban palace, the former official residence of the prime minister. he said.

The 84-year-old microfinance pioneer was appointed as the country’s “chief advisor” following the student uprising that forced Hasina to flee to India by helicopter on August 5.

Hasina’s 15-year rule has seen widespread human rights abuses, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings of her political opponents, and this month a Bangladesh court issued a warrant for her arrest.

More than 700 people had been killed before Hasina’s fall, most of them in a brutal police crackdown.

As he fled, thousands of people raided his former home, which the government said was a “symbol of oppression”.

The walls of the palace, which was looted and damaged in the chaos after Hasina’s escape, were covered with graffiti condemning the fallen regime.

The museum will house a replica of the Aynaghar detention centre, the infamous “House of Mirrors” run by the Hasina regime. This center got its name because detainees should not see anyone but themselves.

“Aynaghar should remind visitors of the torture that secret prisoners were subjected to,” Yunus said.

Hasina’s ouster caused at least two days of chaos, including the looting of a museum at the home of the father of Bangladesh’s first president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
