WCSO expresses concerns about cryptocurrency scams

RENO, Nev. (COLO) – Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says cyber scams double during the holiday months and alarming fraud is currently occurring.

Scammers call people and ask them to pay search warrant fees to the sheriff’s office. The phone number has been copied to look like the correct WCSO phone number, but it is not.

WCSO Detective Richard Spaulding says there are some red flags to look out for to see if this is a scam.

First, WCSO will not call you to deal with warranty charges and will not require you to stay on the phone for any bank withdrawals.

They will never ask you to use cryptocurrency to pay for these warrants, nor will they ask you to leave the money in person.

If you receive such a call, you are asked to report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
