Bodycam video shows man trying to stab Santa Monica officer outside headquarters

Santa Monica The Police Department released body camera footage on Thursday showing a brutal scene outside police headquarters. ended with an officer being stabbed and one suspect was shot and killed.

According to SMPD, the incident occurred on October 5. It all started at a Target store at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Broadway. Surveillance footage shows a man entering the store and asking an employee for help. After the employee threw the knife from behind, the man was seen laying the employee on the ground, taking the knife from his hand and leaving the store.

That’s when police say the man walked toward SMPD Headquarters on Olympic Way, a few blocks from Target.

Surveillance video shows the man running to the door of the building and ringing the bell to call someone. A police officer coming out of the building saw the man. The two spoke briefly. The man was seen holding his hand inside his jacket. When the officer said the man’s standing made him nervous, the man asked, “Are you nervous?” he asked. He then took out his knife and attacked the police.

The two struggled and the officer shot the suspect at least three times.

Other officers ran out of the building to help the first officer, who was heard saying he had been stabbed.

It was determined that the suspect died at the scene. The police officer was released after being taken to hospital.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the officer’s use of deadly force, and SMPD is investigating the suspect and his potential motive.
