The teenager had been on ventilator support at a private hospital in Phase 9 since the November 13 attack, which claimed the life of his friend, 17-year-old Daman Kumar, the same day.

Police said Dilpreet was shifted to PGIMER on Wednesday but she did not survive despite medical attention.

Both young people were stabbed by a group of six people after their bicycles collided in Kumbra village. The villagers took them to a private hospital in Phase 9, where doctors declared Daman dead after being stabbed in the chest. Both young people had finished school and joined private businesses.

Demanding the arrest of the accused, Daman’s family put his body in a coffin the next morning and blocked the Sector 68/79 light point on Airport Road.

In response, the police blocked all four roads leading to the protest site, causing serious traffic chaos on the main artery connecting Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and on the ring roads some 5 km away.

The family lifted the protest 53 hours later on November 16 after police arrested four of the accused, including a child. They had spent two days and nights at the crossroads, braving the fog and cold in search of justice.

Following Dilpreet’s death, heavy police force was deployed in Kumbra village on Thursday to prevent any further untoward situation.

A week after the deadly attack, police arrested a total of seven defendants in the case.

Apart from the boy, the other accused are Aman Taank of Sector 52, Chandigarh; Arun and Akash, both residents of Kumbra; and Ritesh and Amit. All five originally hail from Uttar Pradesh. According to police, Taank had stabbed both victims.

Police had also arrested Gaurav, a resident of Sohana, originally from Uttar Pradesh, for aiding the accused. After the crime, he allegedly provided them with new SIM cards and dropped them off at Chandigarh’s Sector-17 ISBT.
