Ron Johnson said ingredients in American food should be investigated as they may be linked to chronic diseases

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Thursday that ingredients in American foods should be investigated because they may be linked to America’s chronic disease epidemic.

Earlier this year Johnson hosted Panel titled “American Health and Nutrition: A Second Opinion” Where various witnesses testified about rising child obesity, processed foods, Big Pharma, and the state of institutions like the Food and Drug Administration.

Johnson explained that in foods like “Froot Loops,” the American brand has different ingredients than brands in countries like the United Kingdom and Canada.

“We allow them (ingredients) in based on what they call GRAS, ‘generally recognized as safe,'” Johnson said. “So we have 10,000 ingredients that are ‘generally recognized as safe.’ Europe approves food ingredients. There are 400 of them.”

“So somewhere in those 9,600 additional ingredients, there may be ones that contribute to chronic diseases or other harms,” he continued.

Johnson said he hopes to help Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, investigate what causes chronic diseases in the United States.

USDA said Big Food and Big Agriculture do not want the public to know the source of chronic diseases because “from a pharmaceutical perspective, chronic patients are profitable patients.”
