The fire occurred at the Fairhill pizza shop on June 18, 2022, authorities said. The fire ultimately led to the death of Philadelphia Fire Department Lt. Sean Williamson and five other first responders were injured when the building collapsed.

The owner of the building was 31-year-old Eşref Halil It is located in the 300 block of West Indiana Avenue, where both the pizza shop and the apartments are located.

Authorities said Khalil and Isaam Jaghama, 31, set the building on fire to file an insurance claim for the damages.

Allegedly, Halil signed documents demanding insurance compensation of over $400,000 on the day of the fire.

Khalil and Jaghama were convicted of conspiracy to commit malicious damage by burning down a building used in interstate commerce and other related charges. Khalil was also found guilty of wire fraud.

According to authorities, Halil will face penalties ranging from 17 years in prison to life imprisonment. Jaghama faces seven years to life in prison when convicted.

Shortly after the fire occurred, authorities said Khalil flew from the United States to Jordan after telling investigators he had no travel plans. However, he was denied entry to Jordan and arrested at an airport in New York City. Authorities said they used handcuffs with the deceased firefighter’s initials on them.

A fire broke out in a pizza shop, a firefighter died

51-year-old Lieutenant Sean Williamson, who was trapped under the debris in the fire on June 18 and was declared dead at the scene, lost his life.

Eight people were safely evacuated from the apartments after the fire broke out, but once the fire was brought under control the building collapsed, trapping Williamson inside.

Williamson, 51, was buried on Monday, June 27, 2022. During the funeral ceremony attended by hundreds of people. The lieutenant was a 27-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department. He worked at Ladder 18 in the Hunting Park neighborhood. The municipality said he had a son.

He taught at the department’s fire academy, served with the specialized company Rescue 1 and was a member of PA-Task Force 1, the federal urban search and rescue team sponsored by the PFD, the department said.

“He was a great man, a great firefighter, and he made the ultimate sacrifice to protect this city,” Ellie Holt, who studied with Williamson at the Fire Academy, said at his funeral.

Williamson had a son. He was a Marine before joining the PFD, the ministry said.
