Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, 36 — nicknamed “Mrs. “Cyanide” by Thai media — was found guilty of poisoning her friend Siriporn Kanwong, 32, on Wednesday in the first of 14 murder trials. CBS reported.

Following the couple’s trip to Ratchaburi province, west of Bangkok, in April 2023, traces of cyanide were found on the victim’s body and her money, phone and bags were missing.

Following Rangsiwuthaporn’s arrest, police uncovered similar killings dating back to 2015, including one of his alleged targets who survived. According to BBC.

During the fatal trip, Kanwong collapsed and died after eating with Rangsiwuthaporn, who did not try to save him, investigators said.

Police said Rangsiwuthaporn, who denied the charges against him, was addicted to gambling and targeted his wealthy friends, whom he defrauded of thousands of dollars, which he refused to pay back.

According to the BBC, Rangsiwuthaporn was smiling when he was sentenced to death.

Rangsiwuthaporn’s ex-husband, Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn, was sentenced to one year and four months in prison after possibly helping her poison her ex-boyfriend, Suthisak Poonkwan.

A former police officer and Rangsiwuthaporn’s lawyer was also sentenced to two years in prison for helping him hide evidence to avoid investigation.

They had also pleaded not guilty before Wednesday’s sentencing, according to the BBC.

Rangsiwuthaporn was also ordered to pay 2 million baht ($57,667) to Kanwong’s family.

Rangsiwuthaporn faces 13 more murder charges and has been charged with nearly 80 crimes in total.

The use of cyanide is strictly regulated in Thailand, and those who use it without permission can face up to two years in prison.
