Some parents call for transparency after Delaware County school counselor accused of child pornography

ASTON TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — Some parents in the Penn-Delco School District are demanding more transparency from the administration following a criminal investigation into an 8th grade counselor at Northley Middle School in Aston, Pennsylvania.

“I think we need more, and I think we deserve more,” said Kathi, who has a daughter at Northley Middle School.

Parents voiced their concerns to district leaders at Wednesday night’s meeting.

Kevin Siegel, 45, indicted on 17 counts of child pornography as well as criminal use of a communications facility.

Detectives found more than a dozen images of children being sexually abused on his laptop and phone.

He had been a counselor at Northley Middle School for more than twenty years.

A middle school counselor in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, has been charged with possession of child pornography.

“All our children were his responsibility. We sent our children to him whenever they had a problem,” Kathi said.

Police began investigating Siegel after receiving a tip on Sept. 13.

Delaware County detectives served a search warrant on Siegel on Oct. 24.

That same day, police notified the district that Siegel was under investigation and they immediately placed him on leave.

“I understand the concerns to a great extent, but this is a very difficult situation,” said school district attorney Michael Puppio. “The potential harm was immediately eliminated and we were told this did not involve any district students or any district facilities or equipment.”

The district said they must also protect students while cooperating with law enforcement and investigating.

Siegel was charged Friday and the school district notified parents Saturday.

“The balance between transparency and integrity of the investigation was a balance that had to be struck, and we feel we did the best we could under the circumstances,” Puppio said.

Some parents told Action News they believe otherwise.

Brian, who has a son at the school, said: “I’m really skeptical about the extent of the investigation inside and outside the school and whether any children were brought into the school.”

“Your job, and I’ve heard this a lot, is to take care of our kids and keep them safe. I hope you do that; go to school, talk to these kids and make sure they’re okay,” he said. Kathi.

Puppio said support is offered to students who need it and they are looking for a new counselor.

Siegel posted $100,000 bail and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 5.
