New £100,000 convenience store given permission to sell alcohol late at night despite neighbors’ concerns

Deal Zuper in Weston Road has been given permission to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week. Stafford Borough Council The licensing subcommittee met on November 15. But the owners of the neighboring property objected to the proposed license for the former hardware store, which was refurbished at a cost of almost £100,000.

A petition with 20 signatures was also sent to the parliament.

One objector told the meeting: “We have tenants there and they are already suffering from too much noise, disruption and lack of communication. The only way we learned anything was through an A4 flyer taped to the window sill.

“Considering the previous business was open from eight to five, my main concern is the opening hours from seven to 11.”

The applicants apologized at Friday’s hearing for a lack of communication with nearby residents. The panel heard the facility was not yet operational and renovations were ongoing.

The applicant’s representative told councillors: “We have seen the submissions and the petition made by the residents. this one local business and we rely entirely on the local community for its survival. We do not expect customers from outside the immediate area because they have to pass by other stores that offer more options. That’s why we must work with the community and have no intention of upsetting local residents; This is a local business for local people.

“The previous store was closed for a while and was an eyesore for the area. My client recently took over the business and invested a lot in renovating everything. It has pledged almost £100,000 to renovate everything from floor to ceiling, including the electricity, so it won’t jeopardize everything by undermining the licence. This is his livelihood and investment and we rely entirely on the local community for everything.

“This establishment is slated to have a permit to remain open much longer than we currently require for alcohol sales; we can open the facility 24 hours a day. The only reason we are here is for the alcohol license, but never after 11pm or 7am on any day.” We don’t want to open first.

“When it comes to noise, please do not treat us like a nightclub. This is a market that gives you the chance to buy food, and alcohol will be a part of it; It will only be a small part of our lines.”

The panel heard the applicant agreed to a number of conditions. the council’s environmental health department. This includes not making deliveries to the property or disposing of any waste in outdoor areas between 22:00 and 07:00. Staffordshire Police made no objection to the application.

A number of measures were proposed by the applicant to prevent crime, disorder and public nuisance, including the provision of bins, the installation of CCTV and the implementation of a “Challenge 25” policy to prevent underage sales of alcohol from anyone appearing to be under 25 years of age.
