Hartford police identify suspect in shooting that killed mother and baby

Local news

Jessiah Mercado, 20, and her 4-month-old son, Messiah, were killed in a shooting in Hartford, Conn., on Tuesday.

Authorities in Hartford, Connecticut are asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect in the shooting. Killed 20-year-old mother and her little son on Tuesday.

Hartford Interim Police Chief Kenny Howell stated at a press conference on Wednesday that the shooting victims were 20-year-old Jessiah Mercado and her 4-month-old son Messiah.

“Every single one of the officers here has been in law enforcement for a long time,” Howell said. “And there are some events, some cases, some events that follow you throughout your life. Now I can tell you that this will be one of those events. “This is a sad day for us in the City of Hartford.”

Howell identified the suspect as Lance Morales, 23, of Waterbury, Connecticut. He asked for help from the public to find him.

“I will say this, do not approach this person,” the chief said. “He should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see this person, you should call 9-1-1.”

Hartford police said officers responded to Hartford Hospital around 2:47 p.m. Tuesday to a report of multiple people with gunshot wounds in a vehicle.

Mercado and her son were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said. A third victim, a man in his 20s, was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The fourth person in the vehicle, the driver, escaped uninjured.

Police located the scene of the attack near 380 New Britain Boulevard and found multiple shell casings in the area. In the video that emerged during the investigation, it is seen that while Mercado’s car was parked in the area, another vehicle pulled up next to the car and, according to police, the suspect, allegedly Morales, opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Authorities said the attack stemmed from a dispute over a vehicle between Morales and Mercado, whom they described as an “acquaintance.”

Police said an arrest warrant was issued for Morales on charges of possession of a firearm, assault, attempted assault, two counts of murder and murder under special circumstances. His bond was set at $3 million.

Howell directly addressed Morales, who was referred to as “Macho,” during Wednesday’s press conference.

“Lance, you have no choice but to turn yourself in to the Hartford Police Department for your horrific crimes,” the police chief said. “You see this hitting the heart of Hartford. … After this press conference, Lance, I want you to pick up the phone and deliver it to this department. Because if you don’t, I promise you and I keep my promises, you will be arrested and I will use all resources to catch you. State, federal and all the partners I have.

Police said Morales fled the scene in a white Infinity Q-70 with Massachusetts license plate 3NEB35, but they also said they believed he had access to several vehicles.

According to MassLiveMercado lived with his son in Springfield, Massachusetts. The baby is reportedly in the Bay State’s foster care system.

“DCF is investigating this tragic situation and is working cooperatively with law enforcement,” the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families said in a statement to MassLive.

Hartford police said the investigation into the shooting is active, with multiple law enforcement agencies involved in the search for Morales.
