Highland Park residents grapple with rising water bills amid growing concerns

It’s not hard to find people plateau park They are upset about the water bill.

“Normally it was around $50. But in the last year and a half, that number has increased to $100,” Darrin Hill said.

This is a long-standing problem in the city.

Rochelle Campbell, who lives across the street from the Hill, said it was difficult to prepare for the bill.

“How can you budget if you never know what the bill will be? You never know when the price will increase. “The price is astronomical,” he said.

The Highland Park City Council on Monday, Nov. 18, approved moving forward with plans to replace the city’s aging water meters with advanced digital models.

Highland Park officials believe the city is paying too much for water.

“They tell us that if they install these new meters, the bills will go down. But what is the guarantee? So how long will it take for you to say we have another debt? It’s very frustrating,” Campbell said.

The water meter project is part of an agreement with the Great Lakes Water Authority and the state of Michigan.

The state will cover the costs.

Highland Park began updating its water meters a decade ago.

“You talk too much, that’s all I see. Everyone is talking. Nobody’s doing anything,” Hill said.

City Council member Khursheed Ash-Shafii understands why residents are frustrated and skeptical.

“Enough fooling around, let’s put the meters down. “My residents call me every day complaining about rising water bills,” Ash-Shafii said.
