Death penalty for woman accused of 14 cyanide murders in Thailand

A woman accused of killing 14 of her friends with cyanide last year in Thailand was sentenced to death.

A court in Bangkok found Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, 36, guilty of poisoning the food and drink of a wealthy friend who was traveling last year.

Police arrested Sararat and uncovered similar deaths dating back to 2015. Another person who was allegedly attacked by Sararat survived.

However, his friend’s relatives refused to accept that he died of natural causes, and as a result of the autopsy, traces of cyanide were detected in his body.

Police said Sararat, whom Thai media called Am Cyanide, was addicted to gambling and targeted friends he owed money to, then stole their jewelry and valuables.

They added that Sararat went to Ratchaburi province, west of Bangkok, with his friend Siripron Khanwong, 32, in April 2023, where they participated in a Buddhist protection ritual at a river.

According to researchers, Siripron fainted and died after eating with Sararat, who made no effort to help him.

Police also said traces of cyanide were found on Siriporn’s body and that her phone, money and bags were missing when she was found.

Siriporn’s mother, Thongpin Kiatchanasiri, said while holding her daughter’s photo, “You have justice, my child. There is justice in this world today.”

Sararat did not accept the accusations against him.

Her ex-husband, a former police officer, and her lawyer were also sentenced to one year, four months and two years in prison, respectively, for hiding evidence to help her evade investigation.

They also pleaded not guilty before Wednesday’s sentencing.

Police said Sararat’s ex-husband, Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn, most likely helped Sararat poison her ex-boyfriend, Suthisak Poonkwan.
