Police officer finds GBH not guilty after tasered man falls from outhouse during chase | UK News

A police officer has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after being accused of tasering a man who later fell from an outbuilding and suffered life-changing injuries.

Metropolitan Police officer Liam Newman appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning to deny the charges.

He is alleged to have unlawfully and maliciously injured Leonard Sandiford.

The 30-year-old man, based at Ilford police station, was chasing Mr Sandiford on foot in Woodford Green, east London, on April 24, 2022, when the 61-year-old man climbed a “shed structure”.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said Newman fell after he was tasered.

The police watchdog conducted a year-long investigation before passing the dossier, which confirmed the charge, to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Newman, of Hornchurch, was granted unconditional bail ahead of his next hearing at Southwark Crown Court on December 18.
