Driver who killed two people in Utah County crash pleads guilty

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — A driver has pleaded guilty in the deaths of two people in 2023 when he was involved in a road rage fight with another driver and crashed into the victims’ vehicle head-on in Eagle Mountain.

On June 4, 2023, Peterson Drew Matheson was driving a Ford F-150 eastbound on SR-73 when he engaged in a lengthy road rage exchange with the driver of a Nissan Maxima. The police say so He crashed into the Nissan, then lost control, crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into a westbound Porsche 911.

Both people in the Porsche died in the crash: Rodney Salm and Michaela Himmelberger.

31-year-old Matheson charged with two counts of 2nd degree felony manslaughtertwo 2nd degree felony charges of “negligent operation of a vehicle resulting in death,” one misdemeanor reckless driving count, and two traffic violations.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to both 2nd-degree felony manslaughter charges. Along with the plea, five other driving-related charges were substantially dismissed.

Matheson’s sentencing is scheduled to be announced on January 6. Court documents say Matheson faces 1 to 15 years in prison plus a $10,000 fine.
