Unknown dangers of energy drinks

Many people today are turning to energy drinks to get some extra energy throughout the day, but sometimes it’s better to be careful before opening the next can.

Accordingly doctorsThere are several reports of patients experiencing serious side effects due to consumption of energy drinks. Some of the more serious cases reported have resulted in strokes and even heart attacks.

Dr. Marc-Alain Babi, neurocritical care specialist Cleveland ClinicThe danger surrounding energy drinks, he said, is that the FDA doesn’t regulate them. This means brands can add whatever content they want; This can lead to excessive amounts of stimulants such as caffeine, sugar, and artificial sweeteners.

When a person consumes too much caffeine, it can put them at risk of dehydration, high blood pressure, increased heart rate, anxiety, and insomnia.

Since each brand uses a different mix of ingredients, it can be difficult to determine how much energy drink is safe to consume. The recommended daily amount of caffeine for an adult is 400 milligrams, which is equal to 10 cans of soda.

But for children ages 12 to 18, the amount is 100 milligrams, which is equal to one 8-ounce cup of coffee.

Babi also urged people to be careful about over-the-counter bodybuilding and weight loss supplements because they are not regulated by the FDA, just like energy drinks.

“Although the rate of complications with energy drinks is quite low, nevertheless not everyone who consumes energy drinks will experience serious side effects, but when these serious side effects occur they can have quite serious consequences in the long term, such as stroke. Extreme caution is therefore advised,” Dr. Babi.
