Ramon Rivera, a 51-year-old homeless man, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, according to the NYPD.

“Three innocent New Yorkers going about their lives were the victims of a horrific, horrific attack,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference. “This is a clear-cut example of the criminal justice system and mental health system that continues to fail New Yorkers, and it is troubling that we stand here today on a day that has brought great hardship to the city. Three New Yorkers, unprovoked attacks, have left us searching for answers as to how something like this could happen.” pushed.”

Rivera was found with blood on his clothes and a pair of bloody kitchen knives, police added.

The first attack occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. when Rivera allegedly stabbed a construction worker in the stomach near the Hudson River.

According to police, Angel Lata Landi, 36, of Peekskill, was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue before being pronounced dead.

About two hours later, police said Rivera fatally stabbed a 67-year-old man in the stomach on East 30th Street.

The third attack took place about 25 minutes later at 42nd Street and First Avenue, where Wilma Augustin, 36, was stabbed in the chest and left arm and was later taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she died, police said.

Police Detective Chief Joseph Kenny said the attacks appeared to be unprovoked.

“He walked up to them and attacked them with knives,” said Kenny.

Kenny added that a passing taxi driver saw the third attack, which he initially thought was a robbery, and alerted the police officer.

Mayor Adams said Rivera was convicted in a criminal case several months ago.
