BIDDEFORD, Maine (WMTW) – A Maine man was sentenced to more than four years in prison Monday after previously pleading guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers with a weapon during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

Christopher Maurer, 45, formerly of Biddeford, was sentenced to 50 months in prison and 24 months of supervised release. Chief U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg also ordered Maurer to pay $2,000 in restitution.

on July 23 Maurer pleaded guilty on a felony charge of assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

He initially faces three counts of assault on an officer with a dangerous weapon and one count each of civil disorder, entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, violence in a restricted building, obstructing passage on Capitol grounds and using physical violence on Nov. 13 remained. Court documents state that Maurer was among a crowd of rioters who gathered on the Lower West Terrace of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, near an area that federal prosecutors say is known as the Tunnel. Violent attacks on law enforcement that day.

Maurer entered the tunnel and moved toward the front of the police line, according to court documents. He then encountered a group of police officers blocking further access to the Capitol.

Prosecutors said Maurer grabbed a police riot shield used by an officer and tried to smash it, also tried to use his body to push against officers in the Tunnel and left after about eight minutes.
