3rd NYC stabbing spree victim dead; Ramon Rivera indicted – NBC New York

A third person died, a 36-year-old woman; A man with a history of mental health issues allegedly Unprovoked stabbing spree in Manhattan The day before, we were knocking people over as they went about their morning routine.

Ramon Rivera, 51, who authorities said records show has an extensive criminal history, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the case that shook five counties when it emerged Monday.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect, later identified as Rivera, placing a purple backpack on the sidewalk. He pulls out a hoodie, puts it on, and pulls out some gloves. He readjusts his hat. Then come the knives.

Police said the first stabbing occurred at 8:22 a.m. on West 19th Street in Chelsea, when a 36-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach outside the construction site where the victim worked. She was pronounced dead at the hospital and was later identified as Angel Lata Landi of Peekskill.

About two hours later, officers responding to a 911 call of a man stabbed on East 30th Street found a 67-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. He also died in the hospital. His identity was not disclosed.

Just 30 minutes later, the third attack took place; A woman was stabbed near 42nd Street and First Avenue. Wilma Augustin, 36, of Manhattan, was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition with stab wounds to her chest and left arm. He later died from his injuries.

Rivera was arrested a few blocks from the scene. Police believe the suspect did not use public transportation or driving between the scenes of the stabbings.

Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference Monday that the suspect had “serious mental health issues” that needed to be examined and that there were questions about why he was on the streets. The mayor said the mental health system continues to “fail New Yorkers.”

Records show Rivera was arrested eight times in New York last year, including seven felonies and one misdemeanor. He was also arrested in Ohio and Florida.

He was released from Department of Corrections custody on Oct. 17 on burglary and assault charges, according to city records. At the time of Monday’s stabbings, Rivera was out on bail in an open grand theft case, accused of taking property from a Manhattan store on Oct. 17, the same day he was released.

Rivera was also arrested three times in January in Hudson County, New Jersey, and was indicted by a grand jury on three counts, according to the Hudson County District Attorney’s Office. According to the indictments, the charges in these cases include criminal mischief, theft and theft.

He was released for pretrial monitoring based on the charges and related guidelines in the Criminal Justice Reform Act, a spokeswoman for the Hudson County prosecutor’s office said. A court order was issued because he did not come to court after the indictment.

Information on Rivera’s potential attorney was not immediately available Tuesday.
