Mexico coach Javier Aguirre fined after hitting him with a beer can in Honduras

Honduras have been ordered to play their next home game behind closed doors after Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was hit by a full can of beer during a Concacaf Nations League match between the two countries.

After the host Honduras won the first leg of the Nations League quarter-final 2-0, Aguirre was bleeding from his face as a result of being hit by a can while approaching rival coach Reinaldo Rueda to shake hands after the match.

Concacaf, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football, launched an investigation and filed a lawsuit against Honduras on the grounds that it “failed to implement adequate stadium security measures”.

The board added: “The disciplinary committee also fined the federation and warned them that harsher sanctions could be imposed if similar incidents occur in future matches.”

While the Mexican football federation said that the behavior that led to the shooting of their manager “has no place in our sport”, Honduras manager Rueda said that the incident overshadowed his team’s victory.

Concacaf also added that a “separate disciplinary case investigating Javier Aguirre’s conduct during the match in question” was being investigated.

The second leg of the tie will be played on November 20 and the quarter-final winner will qualify for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup to be held in Canada and the USA.
