Police arrest BP Batam employee for alleged human trafficking – Archipelago

Police have arrested an employee of the Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) for his alleged involvement in a human smuggling scheme, after previously rescuing two women who were about to travel to Singapore illegally.

The 50-year-old employee, identified only by the initials RS, was arrested along with another suspect identified as MN (54) in Batam Central Port Bay on October 31.

Riau Islands Police chief Sr. Comr. Dony Alexander said police received a tip that two women, LF (37) from East Java and TH (24) from West Nusa Tenggara, were about to leave Batam for Singapore as illegal migrant workers.

“Based on the report, personnel from Riau Islands Police Criminal Investigation Department Subdivision IV conducted a series of investigations to determine whether a crime had been committed,” Dony said in a statement on Monday. Antara reported.

He said that the police were able to rescue the two victims by 13:00 on October 31, and that the police also detained the suspects RS and MN on the same day.

Police seized evidence from the suspects, including two passports, two ferry boarding passes, two ferry tickets, three mobile phones, a savings account passbook and an ATM card.
