A lawsuit was filed against Ave Maria, who stabbed his friend

The defendant remains in the Collier County Jail.

Seven months after a judge ruled that an Ave Maria man who slit his friend’s throat did not have the authority to proceed, Ave Maria has reversed his decision.

Collier Circuit Judge Elizabeth Krier found 30-year-old Paul Arnold competent to stand trial Monday. He ruled otherwise on April 6.

Arnold is once again charged with aggravated battery. He did not admit his guilt in October last year.

Court documents stated Arnold failed to appreciate the charges or allegations against him and failed to appreciate the scope and nature of possible penalties.

The motion also alleged that Arnold failed to understand the adversarial nature of the legal process; failed to display proper courtroom behavior; and could not testify regarding this matter.

According to an incident report from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, on the night of Sept. 20, 2023, authorities interviewed the victim at NCH. Sheriff’s deputies said at the time that the victim did not want to pursue charges.

Two days later, the victim, identified in the report, told deputies that he and Arnold had known each other for years and were “hanging out” at the time of the stabbing.

The victim said they went to Ave Maria, where Arnold slit his throat with a knife. He added that the attack was unprovoked and that he wanted to pursue charges later.

The victim added that the tear, which appeared to be 2 to 3 inches long, required stitches.

Arnold remains in custody at the Collier County Jail. The next hearing date is a case management conference before Krier on December 19.
