UK announces new sanctions against Iran’s air and transport operators

Britain has announced new sanctions on Iran for aiding Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

Iran’s national airline, Iran Air, will freeze its assets in response to the country’s transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia.

The shipping company Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines was sanctioned for its role in transporting Iranian military supplies, and the Russian cargo ship Port Olya-3 was sanctioned for carrying missiles from Iran to Russia.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected to discuss the new sanctions in his speech to the United Nations Security Council in New York on Monday.

Trump is expected to say, “Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable.”

“We have been clear with our international partners that any ballistic missile transfer from Iran to Russia would be met with a significant response.

“That is why today we are imposing sanctions on Iran Airlines and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines in response to Iran’s delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia.

“We reiterate our call on Iran to stop its support for Russia’s illegal Ukrainian war, which continues to bring devastation to the Ukrainian people. “We will stand by Ukraine no matter how long it takes.”

It comes after the Government moved in September to halt flights to Iran, attributed to the Middle Eastern country’s arms supplies to Russia.

At the G20 summit in Brazil, Sir Keir Starmer will press world leaders for more support for Ukraine to defend against Russian forces as it marks 1,000 days since the conflict began.

Britain has imposed sanctions on more than 450 Iranian individuals and entities, including those responsible for expanding Tehran’s influence around the world.

Britain has also imposed sanctions on 2,100 individuals and organizations affiliated with the Russian regime, more than 1,900 since the beginning of Vladimir Putin’s large-scale invasion.
