Cajou Creamery is nearly closing its doors completely until the community steps in

MOUNT VERNON, Md. — For two days, Cajou Creamery had a line of people eagerly waiting to get a scoop of its unique ice cream and help keep the doors open.

“I had so many great experiences here that I thought, ‘I’m definitely not going to do what I can to help them,’” says Dwight Campbell.

Early Saturday morning, the owners of Cajou Creamery post on social mediaHe says the business may have to close its doors completely after the weekend.

Shortly after this post, dozens of people came to the dairy, and dozens turned into hundreds.

“I knew this was going to happen because that’s what Baltimore is, you know, that’s what Baltimore is,” Campbell says.

There was a queue outside the door not only on Saturday but also on Sunday.

“We love what we do and we love the city we’re in; We want to build here; the only problem is that food companies tend not to get financing.”

People in line say they want the business to stay open, including a group of college students who saw the post on social media.

“I’m coming here; I’ve been in the area for the last few years. We are all students at MICA and we discovered such a beautiful part of the city Cajou,” says Artie Sadahiro.

Kate Van Luben says they were proud to stand in a long line outside the business; They say it warms their hearts to see so many people come out to support the ice cream business on a cold day in the fall.

“This is such an important thing, and it’s so exciting to see it in this community, and so I’m so happy to see this work, especially for a small business,” says Kate Van Luben.

Dwight Campbell said the turnout over the weekend was more than he could have asked for from the community, and yet they sold out of every flavor and every beer they had in stock.

Campbell says this is just the beginning of getting back on track as a business.

“It gives us a reprieve, but the underlying problem is still there; you know, financing for small businesses.”

This weekend’s events may keep the doors open a little longer, but business owners say the business will need additional financing to keep the doors open permanently.
